Dr Rowan Williams - RESIGN!

Call me old-fashioned if you will, but I have always believed that “Leaders” are just that, they actually “lead” their political parties, groups, teams or religious movements. They set an example to their “followers” and do their utmost to protect the interests of those in their organisation and the principles for which they stand. They do not seek to destroy those organisations they represent and if they do not seem to be acting in the best interests of them then their leadership needs to be questioned and challenged. They should be removed if they are seen to be acting in a way that does not appear to be in the interests of their movements.

One perfect example, of which I am sure you are all now aware, of a leader acting contrarily to what is required by his role, is the incident involving Dr Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Head of the Church if England, no less, who has backed the adoption of some aspects of Sharia Law in the UK.

I’ll say it straight up – Dr Williams should resign – he is not fit to lead the Church of England!

I am sure that many people now know more about Sharia Law than they did yesterday, if not then please note that it is derived from both the Koran and the example of the life of the prophet Mohammed. However, it differs from how those of us who cherish our traditions in the Western world operate our legal systems and that is because it governs every aspect of Muslim life.

In a number of countries Sharia law is associated with draconian punishments for crimes including theft, adultery or blasphemy, by the amputation of limbs, death by stoning or lashes. In my blog of Monday 19th November 2007 I reported on a Saudi woman who was raped but then found guilty of being in the company of strangers in private and sentenced to be lashed. If this is the sort of thing that Dr Rowan Williams envisages for this country then he has without a doubt alienated the majority of the female population of this country, and also the men I'm sure, and could have potentially set back women’s equality by several hundred years!

Perhaps he should have had a look at the link below prior to opening his sexist mouth. Please don't view if you are squeamish and certainly not in the prescence of minors.

Additionally the Koran says that women should dress modestly, why? Surely a woman should dress as she pleases and men should be self-disciplined enough for this to have no effect. Normal people seem to have managed, so why not Muslims? We are increasingly witnessing the rigid interpretation of this through the increase in sightings of burkha-clad women.

I repeat again – Dr Rowan Williams – RESIGN! You have betrayed the Christian majority, in this country. They expected leadership not subservience. I hope the people of Calne remember this when they next have the opportunity to vote for a party who are prepared to stand up to this betrayal.

To end on a lighter note today, you may recall that I recently went on a skiing trip. I did fly the flag whilst away as can be seen from the pictures below. I made sure I obtained my Euro’s from a sympathetic bank!
